Is LinkedIn the New Facebook?
I feel like I used to troll Facebook to see what people were up to, what parties they were out, who was hanging out with who. I now find myself trolling LinkedIn, seeing what people are up to, who went to grad school, how ridiculously accomplished they are, and generally being voyeuristic. Is LinkedIn the new Facebook? This LinkedIn stalker says, YES.
One Weekend, Three Races
Exciting weekend coming up! Though I am already trying to figure out how I am going to drag myself out of bed tomorrow at 6am and wondering if my legs still work. It's been such a busy week, I've been biking to and from the office, but not doing much running at all. I might try to do a little shake-out run tonight after work. There's a bottle of white wine in the fridge already though, calling my name already (McVVV....McVVVV, drink meeeee).
Tomorrow morning is Lawyers Have Heart, the annual 10k slog up shadeless and unforgiving Canal Road in Georgetown with the final mile on the Death Valley-like Whitehurst Freeway. I am so not complaining about the heat. I just think the location of this race is less than choice. Nonetheless, whatever genius at the American Heart Association thought up the concept of marketing a 10k to law firms and their summer associates, I hope he or she got BIG raise. And the swag for this race is always excellent.
Saturday night I'm running the Potomac River Running Twilight Four miler out in Lansdowne. I actually signed up to run this the first year it was in existence. However it got stormed out by one of the scariest summer storms I have ever had the pleasure of riding out in a metal framed tent. The race was ultimately cancelled and the drive home was ridiculous--it was just pouring SHEETS.
Both races were free to register for so I figured why not? I threw away so much money on race fees last year (Rock n Roll Half in VB, Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, Marine Corp Marathon...) because of injury that I can't justify passing up a free or cheap racing opportunity.
Sunday I will be spectating as [Husband] rides in his first bike race!! I'm so excited to be the spectator/supporter as he has been dragged out of bed many an ungodly hour in the morning to watch me. I'm excited to be returning the favor.
Hurrah for the summer racing season! Anyone else racing this weekend?

978 Days
After 978 days of home ownership and 589 days of marriage, [Husband] and I are living ALONE in our house for the FIRST TIME EVER!!!!!!
I mentioned a few posts ago that my brother and sister-in-law had been living with us for about a year and were moving out this weekend. Well, they moved out on Saturday while we were away camping and now we're all alone (with each other and the dog of course).
We popped a bottle of Veuve on Sunday night (seriously, whoever brought that to our Christmas party, thank you!) to celebrate and then watched a movie. It was kind of glorious.
The house we own originally belonged to [Husband's] older sister. She cut him a serious deal on rent to convince him to move in to the basement when he first graduated in '05. When she moved out to move in with her fiance, some of [Husband's] buddies moved in. We'll call this the era of the Bachelor.
This was when the kegerator arrived at our house, along with many other classy bachelor items including but not limited to: a large coffee table made from a petrified stump of wood, and an elephant table. Yes, exactly what you are thinking, a large plaster elephant holding up a round glass table top with its tusks and trunk. Really though, with three guys (all with girlfriends) such that there were constantly six people in the house, the kegerator was just an environmentally sound purchase.
And just as the geological divisions of time are interrupted by an ice age here and there, in the midst of the Bachelor Era we were interrupted by The First Craiglist Mistake. A temporary vacancy in the house forced [Husband] to find a sub-leaser for about 6 months. We'll call her Peach (she did in fact share a name with a fruit) and boy, was she ever one. I think her most endearing quality was her ability to judge the rest of us for not being vegan or buying all organic groceries. Every weekend she drove to [the next state] to buy organic milk from a local farm. She seemed to miss the irony in driving alone, in your car, to buy "local" organic milk a state away. Thumbs down.
We got engaged in 2008 and officially put a damper on the bachelor party. The guys moved out and I moved in. Back to Craigslist it was (with my mom in the background telling us not to let any axe murderers live with us. Thanks, Mom).
From 2008 to 2010 we had:
The Pilot. He moved into our house, and his then-girlfriend, WP, randomly ended up answering my ad on Craigslist to move into my old place. It was an excellent two-for-one bargain and we have become great friends with both.
The Unemployed Intern aka Craigslist Mistake #2. I know, he presented as somewhat employed when he signed his lease. Lesson learned. I won't get into details here, but let's just say I saw him in the grocery store a few weeks ago and I hid in the frozen food aisle til he was gone. I knew if he saw me he'd want to talk and be all cool and buddy buddy and that would have incited a scene, the likes of which are generally discouraged in the check-out line/your toddler can't hold a candle too. This is already more mention that he deserves on my blog.
Miss E. At last another girl! And one that I like! We spent many an lovely evening drinking wine and watching bad bridal shows. She also introduced me to Mad Men, so I owe her big time! Another lucky friend find.
The Kid. He was so clueless it was totally endearing. He was in grad school and worked full-time so we didn't see him too much, but he was good people.
And then finally we have the Mini S's. It's kind of cool to say that at one time or another, all [Husband's] siblings have lived at our house. It's kind of special.
So now it's just us and the dog. And A LOT of closet space. Yesssss.

Dear West Elm
In theory I really love this duvet cover:
But to be perfectly honest, were this gracing my bed, I simply would not be able to fall asleep with out thinking of the classic New York deli coffee cup:
I would end up dreaming about My Big Fat Greek Wedding and softly saying in my sleep "we are happy to serve you!"

Here is My Rant About the Heat and then I Promise to be Quiet
It is hot. We live in the mid-Atlantic in a city built on a swamp. It is hot and humid. This should not be a surprise to anyone who has spent even a few summer (or spring!) days in the area. And yet all the cries of "OMG, how'd it get soooooo hot?" seem to indicate that people are unaware. It is June. It is DC. It is hot. Let's all move on.
